With your help we are hoping to launch the Creative Access Professional Development Program, setting a new standard in the way we approach disability access in the Australian arts.

Brand X is committed to providing a safe space for diversity and accessibility for artists and audiences, this includes innovating in response to calls from our artistic and cultural community. This year we need your financial support to build the momentum behind our ambition.

We want to see a cultural landscape that integrates Creative Access principles throughout the entire creative process intrinsically: from the very inception of an idea or project, rather than just as an afterthought.

Creative Access is an artistic methodology in which an artist or project embeds inclusive design practices into the early stages of a creative process that will influence, reflect, and inform the works direction and scope.

Brand X champions artists who experiment with new ways of making, developing and showing work, the creation of The Creative Access Development Program is not only to increase accessibility for artists and audiences but to innovate within artforms and build capacities of practicing artists.

The Creative Access Professional Development Program will be delivered as a one-on-one mentorship lead by professional practicing artists with disability Eugenie Lee and Amy Claire-Mills, and is designed for artists with or without lived experience of disability. Mentors will guide artists through the process of embedding access elements into the way they think about the creation and delivery of their work, and ultimately aims to build an industry that fully integrates accessibility.

The Creative Access Professional Development Program will use a three-pronged approach:

  • First: opening up new compositional avenues for the wellbeing of the artists;
  • Second: removing access barriers for audiences as well as the artists creating the works;
  • Third: create aesthetically bold and new works through a new artistic process and contribute outcomes into Australia’s creative culture.

Over 22% of Australians identify as having additional access needs and whilst we can’t make any one work universally accessible, this mentorship will give selected artists the tools and guidance to hone in on the accessibility elements that will best enhance their work and best serve the creators and their audience. This could be in the form of seamlessly embedding accessibility into the works, such as, creatively weaving in relaxed performance options, Auslan interpreting or tactile interactive elements within the performance narratives, or building potential contingencies throughout the process and the outcomes.

Brand X is an organisation that provides support for the creation of new, experimental works, while also fostering pathways for project development. As a facilitator, we are the ideal organisation to inject accessible creative methodology into the foundation of arts practice. We are committed to this program.
