Creative Live Work Spaces

BANNER IMAGE: WATERLOO TENANTS: AMY ZHANG, JACKSON GARCIA, TIAN ZHANG, ADAM ROTHWELL

BANNER IMAGE CREDIT: KATHERINE GRIFFITHS/CITY OF SYDNEY

THIS PROGRAM IS NOW CLOSED

The City of Sydney has long recognised the challenges facing artists when seeking affordable space to live and work in the inner city. Since 2013, The Council has responded to this by offering subsidised residential leases in their city-owned properties located in Darlinghurst and Waterloo for artists to both live and work from the same premises.

As Creative Tenancy Manager, Brand X are now seeking applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and creatives to live and work in these properties for an 18-month period from early April 2021. Rent is set at $200 per week excluding outgoings/utilities. Applicants are required to demonstrate a relevant creative practice to pursue throughout their tenancy and identify why they would benefit from this unique opportunity.

Brand X encourage applications from a diverse cross-section of the creative community including (but not limited to) visual arts, performing arts, craft, music, literature, design and technology.

6 one-bedroom creative live/work apartments are available on William Street in Darlinghurst, providing working studios and residential accommodation for individuals or couples. In addition, a two-bedroom apartment is available above the Waterloo Library to accommodate a small group or family under this creative tenancy program. Each apartment comes unfurnished and includes a small kitchen, bathroom, laundry and bedroom area and a separate space to work.

The City aims to foster opportunities for cultural, creative and commercial exchange that may otherwise not be possible in the inner city. This opportunity allows artists and creatives 18 months to focus on their practice in a focused and relaxed environment supporting their creative projects.

An Applicants Pack is available for download below that includes information on how to apply for this tenancy and links to the virtual property tours. Please read carefully as it details the terms and conditions and the obligations of successful tenants. The pack also includes selection criteria and what to address in your 2-page application. All Applicants are required to view the online virtual property tour(s) and are encouraged to attend an online Information Session prior to submitting an application, please register below.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and creatives are encouraged to apply. All applications will be assessed by Brand X and a panel of industry representatives in consultation with the City of Sydney.

If you would like to talk to someone about your application, please contact [email protected]
