Creative Retail Residency Program

From time to time, Brand X have opportunities to support Artists and Craft-persons with retail space to sell directly to the public. These opportunities are appropriate for makers of bespoke, hand-made, fine-grain products or services with preference given to applicants with previous market, on-line or retail experience. Depending on the space made available, Artists have 3-12 months residency with creative control of fit-out, branding and operation. Most spaces will require standard retail operating hours.

Brand X is calling for artists to re-imagine the relationship and function of studio, gallery and retail space in our Creative Retail Residency Program.

The program offers Artists and/or Creative Producers space to create, exhibit and sell their work directly to the public. The program not only exists to offer work-space, but provide opportunities for artists to generate income from their work, develop self-managed micro-business and encourage the general public to engage with their creative practice.

The residencies are open to professional artists (emerging and established) encompassing a diverse range of practises which could include (but not limited to) painting, illustration, sculpture, jewellery, fashion, textiles, craft, publications and design.

Successful Artists will be offered a tenancy to create an immersive (but functional) environment that is part studio, part installation, part retail concept store. This initiative encourages Artists to think of space as an artwork unto itself and the potential for this to be a new platform that builds public engagement and appreciation for your work, within a unique and engaging retail environment.

Successful artists will have one-week to fit-out the space followed by 3-months trial period of trade and production. The space must be open to the public during standard retail operating hours. Brand X provides the point-of-sale system and will take a 30% commission on sales to support the running costs of the initiative (ie: rent, electricity, internet).

Please note: It is critical that applicants have a significant level of experience in retail and significant levels of stock/work/products available ready for display and sale. Experience also indicates that a program of events, workshops or promotions are beneficial to public engagement and sales during the residency term.
