Our Programs Performing Arts Residencies FLYING NUN PERFORMING ARTS RESIDENCY Image: NARCIFIXION (from season 4) by Anton and Brianna Kell (Photo by Jhuny-Boy Borja) The Flying Nun is a contemporary performing arts residency program at the East Sydney Community and Arts Centre in Darlinghurst that supports artists making new work and taking risks. It aims to encourage and support new and local fringe performance ideas that otherwise wouldn’t see the light of day. What are we looking for? Brand X are keen to hear from professional performing artists working with contemporary culture. We want to showcase new, avant-garde ideas that provoke and push creative boundaries. We are here to nurture concepts that the more conventional performance spaces are hesitant to run. Our program takes place on Friday and Saturday nights for a standard ticket price of $25. We are interested in shows that run for around 60mins, have a two-night run with the option to do two sittings per night (7 pm and 9 pm). We welcome new work, new ideas and new approaches to performance. No idea is too out-there, too fresh or too risky to be considered. Now in its seventh season, The Flying Nun has become a performance program with a highly engaged audience. It is also fast becoming a marketplace for Producers to shop for new productions to take elsewhere. Because of this, Brand X has refined its criteria to meet the expectations of audiences and the industry. These include: calibre and professional experience of the creative team; innovation and contemporary relevance of the project’s concept; potential market appeal and success with audiences at the box office; the potential for the project to tour and/or be produced elsewhere. Due to the popularity of the program, projects and creative teams that have already been supported by Brand X are unlikely to be successful. Similarly, community events and variety-night programs may also not make this season’s cut. We are keen to invest in new, narrative-based performance ideas created by teams who are new to The Flying Nun experience.Projects are selected through an EOI process assessed by Brand X and a peer assessment panel made up of professional representatives from the performing arts sector in NSW. What's in it for you? We support artists and their new works with a 95% box office return for The Flying Nun performances at ESCAC and a $1300 stipend contribution towards your production. Our staff are here to help you realise your ideas with access to our production equipment, marketing support, and front of house for performance nights. We can also offer free development time in one of our rehearsal spaces in Sydney if required.
