I'm lucky in my line of work to engage remarkable artists who are compelled to change the world by sharing their lived experience. And on International Women's Day I cannot stop thinking about Imogen Kelly who is preparing an incredibly brave work to be presented as part of The Flying Nun by Brand X at the end of this month. Former World Queen of Burlesque, this Sydney artist is a survivor of familial breast cancer which took her mother and grandmother. The bravery of this work (and where it must be taking her in her head right now as she creates it) is part horrific and part FU to cancer. For Imogen, her work "Dark Matter" is the space between dreams and hallucinations, between sleep and death, exploring the hallucinations that she experienced whilst undergoing treatment and surgery. We must never underestimate the journey an artist goes through to realise a new work, the mining of tragedy and triumph - all so we might know OURSELVES better!!! That is a sacrifice and a gift and a power gesture of humanity. We are privileged to be in the company of such giving people. And I thank you in advance for sharing this intimacy with us: dark-matter.eventbrite.com.au...
