Performing arts residency

BANNER IMAGE: LOVE BURNS by THE OTHER THEATRE (2020) PHOTOGRAPHER: MATT KEMP

THE FLYING NUN EOI'S OPEN 18 JANUARY AND CLOSE MIDNIGHT 12 FEBRUARY 2021.

The Flying Nun program showcases outcomes from our performing arts residencies at the East Sydney Community and Arts Centre in Darlinghurst (ESCAC). It is a space where artists can develop and test new contemporary performance work.

Nurturing new performance concepts that the more conventional spaces are hesitant to run.

What are we looking for?

Brand X is keen to hear from professional and emerging artists working in dance, theatre, live music, performance art, comedy, film, and contemporary culture. We want to showcase new, avant-garde ideas that provoke and push creative boundaries. We are here to nurture concepts that the more conventional performance spaces are hesitant to run… So don’t be afraid to think completely unconventionally… The weirder and wilder – the better.

Our performance program takes place on Friday and Saturday nights for a standard ticket price of $25. We are interested in shows that run for around 60mins, have a two-night run and are open to discussing doing two sittings per night (7pm and 9pm). We welcome new work, new ideas, and new approaches to performance. No idea is too out-there, too fresh, or too risky to be considered.

Artists will be selected through an EOI process assessed by a peer assessment panel and Brand X.

What's in it for you?

We support artists and their new works with a 95% box office return for The Flying Nun performances at ESCAC and a $1300 stipend contribution towards your production. Our staff is here to help you realise your ideas with access to our production equipment, marketing support, and front of the house for performance nights. We can also offer free development time in one of our rehearsal spaces in Sydney if required.

ESCAC has a professional lighting rig, sound, AV, and modular staging system. Our Covid-19 capacity is 25-50 pax (depending on current square meterage restrictions and seating configuration) with a bar and box office.
