Our Programs Performing Arts Residencies Site-responsive performance residency Brand X invite artists with experience in self-devised, site-specific performance installation to submit an EOI to our inaugural site-responsive performance residency program. Thanks to the City of Sydney and The Darlo Bar (Darlinghurst), seven artists will be supported to create 7-minute individual performances in the hotel rooms above the pub to be performed multiple times for a promenade audience over a two-night season on April 12 & 13 titled Petite Suite. This opportunity is appropriate for contemporary performing artists working in contemporary theatre, spoken word, music, dance, comedy, cabaret, performance art, performative installation, interactive multi-media or multi-art forms. Selected artists will undertake a mini-residency to devise a new work that responds to this unique environment while living on premises. Artists will need to be available for the following dates: Part 1: 6pm Monday March 22 - 10am Tuesday March 23: Artist induction with sleep-over. Part 2: 11am Sunday April 11 - 10am Wednesday April 14: Live-In residency (with performances 6pm-7pm & 8pm-9pm on both Monday April 12 and Tuesday April 13). What's in it for you? Selected artists will receive a $1500 Artist Fee plus a $1250 Stipend to help realise the work, covering production costs such as engaging technical support and equipment, purchasing materials, hiring or creating costumes or working with collaborators. The Petite Suite performances will be filmed and given to artists as documentation. How it works? Performances created in this intensive residency respond to the individual hotel room spaces and artists are encouraged to explore the colourful history of the pub, surrounding area and its current use as a hotel, referencing the hotels maritime history, the ladies parlour, the political speeches, the transit nature of guests, the history of Darlinghurst since its opening, its current context or whatever inspiration they get from being in the room over the residency. Selected artists create a site-responsive work while living in the room as part of their residency. Artists will have an opportunity to meet each other and familiarise themselves with the Darlo Bar Hotel with a one-night sleep-over on March 22. Then 3-weeks later, artists are given keys to their room at 11am Sunday April 11 to create the work until the first audience arrives at 6pm Monday April 12. Small audiences will be invited into the entire upstairs hotel over two consecutive nights to experience immersive performance where each room hides a 7-minute story. The artist checks out the following morning at 10am. Applications close midnight Thursday 11 March APPLY HERE
